Ingredients

For the Syrup
  • 2 whole Grapefruit Choose fresh, ripe grapefruits for the best flavor and vibrant color.
  • 1.5 cups Granulated Sugar Acts as a sweetener and preserves the syrup.
Optional Cleaning
  • 1 teaspoon Baking Soda Use this to scrub the grapefruit and remove any wax or dirt.

Equipment

  • medium-sized saucepan
  • airtight container

Method

Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. Begin by scrubbing the exterior of the grapefruits under running water, using a teaspoon of baking soda to remove any dirt or wax. Once cleaned, pat them dry.
  2. Cut off both the top and bottom of each grapefruit to create flat surfaces for stability. Peel off the outer skin and the bitter white pith underneath. Remove any seeds you encounter.
  3. In a medium-sized saucepan, combine half of the peeled grapefruit pieces with 1.5 cups of granulated sugar. Stir well to ensure the sugar evenly coats the fruit.
  4. Place the saucepan over medium-low heat and simmer for about 20 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking.
  5. Once you observe big bubbles forming, lower the heat and allow it to continue simmering for an additional 5 minutes.
  6. After simmering, let it cool slightly for about 5 minutes before adding the remaining grapefruit pieces. Increase the heat and simmer again for 1-2 minutes.
  7. Pour it into an airtight container, cool completely before sealing. Store in the refrigerator for up to a month.
