Ingredients

For the Cake
  • 1/2 cup Butter softened; margarine can be used for a dairy-free alternative
  • 1/2 cup Granulated Sugar to sweeten the cake perfectly
  • 1/2 cup Dark Brown Sugar for depth and a hint of molasses flavor; light brown sugar works in a pinch
  • 2 large Eggs to provide structure and moisture
  • 1/4 tsp Vanilla Extract to enhance the cake's flavor
  • 1 1/4 cups All-Purpose Flour substitute with a gluten-free blend if needed
  • 1 tsp Baking Soda acts as a leavening agent
  • 1 tsp Ground Cinnamon adds warmth and complements the apples; consider a touch of nutmeg for extra flavor
  • 1/4 tsp Salt balances sweetness and enhances flavor
  • 1 1/2 cups Chopped Apples (about 2 medium, peeled); choose Granny Smith or Honeycrisp for best results
  • 1/2 cup Chopped Walnuts adds a delightful crunch; can be omitted or replaced with pecans for a nut-free cake

Equipment

  • 9-inch round baking pan
  • Mixing Bowl
  • Hand mixer

Method

Preparation Steps
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9-inch round baking pan with butter or non-stick spray.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine softened butter, granulated sugar, and dark brown sugar. Beat on medium speed for 2 to 3 minutes until light and fluffy.
  3. Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Pour in the vanilla extract and mix until fully incorporated.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together all-purpose flour, baking soda, ground cinnamon, and salt. Gradually add this mix to the wet ingredients, mixing on low speed just until combined.
  5. Gently fold in chopped apples and walnuts with a spatula.
  6. Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan and spread evenly. Bake for 40 to 45 minutes until golden and a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
  7. Remove from oven and cool in the pan for about 10 to 15 minutes.
  8. Carefully invert onto a wire rack to cool completely, then slice and serve.
