  • 1 pound ground beef or turkey or substitute with ground pork or shredded chicken
  • 1 medium onion chopped; shallots can be used for milder taste
  • 2 cloves garlic minced; use garlic powder if necessary
  • 1 cup ketchup or barbecue sauce for a twist
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce or soy sauce as a substitute
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar or use honey or maple syrup
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika regular paprika can be used
  • to taste salt
  • to taste pepper
For the Melts
  • 4 slices thick-cut bread sourdough or ciabatta
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese or cheddar for a sharper flavor
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese or Pecorino Romano
  • 2 tablespoons butter softened
  • optional fresh parsley for garnish

Method
 

Cooking Instructions
  1. Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Add the ground beef or turkey, breaking it apart as it cooks. Stir frequently for about 5-7 minutes until browned and cooked through. Drain excess fat.
  2. In the same skillet, add the chopped onion and minced garlic. Sauté for about 3-4 minutes until the onions are translucent and fragrant.
  3. Stir in the ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, and smoked paprika. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Cook over low heat for 5-7 minutes until thickened.
  4. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  5. Spread butter on one side of each slice of bread and place butter-side down on a baking sheet.
  6. Spoon the sloppy joe mixture onto each slice of bread. Top with shredded mozzarella and grated Parmesan cheese.
  7. Bake in the preheated oven for 10-12 minutes, until the cheese is bubbly and golden. Use the broiler for an extra crispy top, watching closely to prevent burning.
  8. Remove from the oven and let cool for 1 minute. Garnish with parsley, cut diagonally, and serve.
